October 12 - November 2, 2013

The Brickhouse Gallery
2837 36th Street, Sacramento, CA

The 20th Annual Altares del Mundo Art Exhibit opens on October 12th 2013 during the Second Saturday Art Walk at the Brickhouse Gallery in Sacramento from 6:00 - 9:00 pm.

The exhibition is free and will run from October 12 through November 2nd with docent staffing each Saturday and Sunday, 12:00-4:00 pm.

The Altares del Mundo Art Exhibit is a Sacramento tradition organized by a grassroots community of artists. The exhibition presents modern interpretations of remembrance loosely-based on the “Day of the Dead.” Altars express artistic and personal views on subjects as varied as family members, friends, pets, celebrities, social trends, environmental issues, political statements, tragedy, misfortune & war.

Altares del Mundo offers free teacher resources which can be downloaded from the Altares web site and free docent-lead tours for school groups. Tours are by appointment only and can be scheduled Wednesday through Friday.

Priestess Edition is almost there...

Started editioning the priestess. Got about 8 printed before I noticed the red cutmarks being picked up (see above card on the right) So out of 20 I've got about 12 to work with for an edition of 10. Not such good odds, may end up printing more in order to get a good edition. An edition is a set number of prints that are very very very consistent.

Here you can see why two of the same prints would not be considered an edition. There is a variation in the color between these two cards. For some reason the brayer (roller) didn't pick up and/or transfer as much blue ink to the printing block when I pulled the card on the above right. Variations like this occur because a human being is printing these images. If a machine were doing this, as in the pages of a magazine, then variations are an extreme rarity. When a human being does it clean consistent editions are not as easy.

Personally I like variations and usually consider minor variations to still be within an edition. But for a master's degree in printmaking my thesis project has to be full of good clean consistent editions. Simply because a master had better be able to know the difference and produce.

Because of the nature of the handmade paper these cards are being printed on there will be some variations that are unavoidable. these handmade papers with four deckled edges (jaggedy untrimmed edges) don't always have even or squared edges. Because of this some of the cards will have a slight border on the top and/or the left edge. (see the top of the right hand card on the very top of this blog)

IF: "And I Can See Russia From My House!"

This is a recent aquatint etching I did. I thought it perfectly fit this week's Illustration Friday theme of "Vacant." As well at this week's Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) activities and next week's elections...

Some appropriate toonage:

An Altar to the Bee

I just finished my final project for my Sacred Geometry class. I created an altar to bees using encaustic (wax) painting medium, a Super (bee hive box), bee hive frames, altered stickers, wooden bees, live flowers, candles and found objects.

My favorite found object is a vintage h
oney pot my mother in law was about to toss out.

S
omething really cool happened while I was doing the encaustic painting, a very large honey bee flew through the altar and buzzed around each of the melting encaustic color pans then left.

I told my sacred geometry professor that it must have been Artemis coming to bless the project...

Dia de los Muertos 2

I will post pictures from one of the altars at the Space 15 event. I appologize for not having the names of the alatristas and artists involved as there were few names posted...it was a very "organic" show.

If you are one of the altarista/artists please post your comments here and tell us about your work!

Dia de los Muertos

These are a few pics from the Day of the Dead show over the weekend. The "Venus at her Toilet" images are the vignette I installed. It's based on a painting of the same name by Diego Velasquez. The last one is an image of an artwork that was hanging around...
